ARTIPHON ARTIST'S GUIDE

Orba

We created this resource for our professional artists and collaborators. If you’ve recently received one of our instruments, please give this a read-through. It has details on the technology, best practices for social media, and tools for connecting with us and other artists.

Nobody knows your art better than you. In our view, the most important thing is that you find what truly interests you about Orba. If you’re feeling friction, we’re here to help however we can.

I’m at jacob@artiphon.com and Jacob Gordon on Discord (more on that below).

BOOK A PRIVATE TUTORIAL

Let’s start by hopping on a quick video chat to get Orba running with your workflow. We can help you get set up quickly, especially if you have some more advanced things in mind. Please pick a day and time in the Calendly widget below...

JOIN THE PRIVATE ARTIST'S DISCORD

There’s a private Discord channel for Artiphon artists. If you’re not familiar with Discord it’s basically Slack… but somehow nerdier.

On Discord you can message us directly for fast replies. You can also connect with other artists in our network, post about your recent work, and meet collaborators. We're building this from the ground up, so don't be shy and grab a hammer.

Make an account and it will ask you for this link.

WAYS TO PLAY

ONBOARD SYNTH

STANDALONE AS A SYNTH

We designed a unique new onboard synth engine that is compatible with Orba’s expressive playing gestures. Use the integrated four-part looper to build musical ideas with no external gear required.

Orba has an internal synthesizer and built-in speaker. You don't need anything else to start making your first sounds

WITH THE ORBA APP (iOS, Android, Mac, Windows)

WITH THE ORBA APP (iOS, Android, Mac, Windows)

The Orba App lets you change sounds and save and share your songs. If you make a great beat on Orba this is how you'll export it onto your phone or computer. Connect via USB-C or Bluetooth.

Use Orba as a MIDI controller (MPE compatible) with your DAW, soft synths, mobile apps, and even hardware synths and drum machines.

GETTING THE BEST AUDIO FOR YOUR VIDEO

If you want to capture direct audio from Orba, here are a couple of ways:

DIRECT LINE OUT

DIRECT LINE OUT

Orba has an 1/8" headphone jack. You can use a cable to go straight into your audio interface, effects pedals, or phone. Note: if you want to run line audio into your iPhone you’ll need an iRig or similar.

CONTROL MIDI

CONTROL MIDI

Use Orba the same way you'd use a MIDI keyboard to track MIDI in your DAW. For detailed information on MIDI mapping, go here.

Use Orba the same way you'd use a MIDI keyboard controller and have access to all of your DAWs sounds, settings, and recording functionality.

POSTING ON SOCIAL

We trust you to do what you do best. But here are a few pointers to help get the most out of social posts.

INSTAGRAM

INSTAGRAM

Tag: @Artiphon, #Orba, and #OrbaLoops

We always prefer IG timeline posts over stories (which only last 24 hours). We want your content to get as much viewership as possible, and timeline posts can be shared more broadly with our audiences. Also, timeline posts can trend on IG discover pages (stories can't).

If you post IG stories, we suggest putting them in a Highlight where we can continue to link to them.

*For tips on how to use hashtags to your advantage on Instagram check out this Hootsuite article.

VIDEO PRODUCTION

Keep in mind:

- Sometimes Orba can be hard to see because it's small.

- Sometimes Orba can be hard to see because it's black.

Here are a few videos that we think make it easy to see Orba:

Thank you so much for being one of the first to bring this new invention to life. Tools like Orba are nothing without the minds and hands that animate them.
