A MESSAGE FROM THE INVENTOR

Dr. Mike Butera, Founder & CEO

Artiphon is a company dedicated to inventing smart, playful instruments we can all enjoy.

Orba is our second major experiment in rethinking the musical interface. We’d been working for several years with various concepts for a handheld, gestural instrument design. In Orba we wanted to meld historical instrument designs (rattles, hand drums), the familiarity of domestic objects (citrus fruit, teacups), and the devices that are commonplace in our lives (smartphones, game controllers) and the physical movements they suggest.

It was important to make Orba affordable, and it took some true feats of engineering to get everything into a $99 package (having aerospace engineers on the team makes a difference). It was important to allow for a screen-free experience. Many of us feel we spend more of our lives around glowing rectangles that we’re comfortable with; it was a great challenge give people the opportunity to create multi-part music without additional devices required.

For years we’ve been observing how people delight in simplicity. Beginners want the intuitive, and pros complain of feature-fatigue. We gave Orba a playful simplicity that is refreshing for experienced musicians and truly accessible for learners and youth. It’s been especially exciting to see how kids pick up Orba and basically start “texting” out beats.

Making a product feel magical and simple often means a deep layer of technology below the surface. Orba brings together technologies that have never before been combined in a musical device. The pads of the top surface are capacitive touch sensors – similar to what you’d find in a modern trackpad or smartphone screen. This allows for incredible sensitivity, aftertouch, and even “negative latency” as the pad can feel your finger’s approach before it makes contact.

Orba’s haptic engine gives the user physical feedback, which is so important for music-making. And the accelerometer and gyroscope allow for spatial gestures and other adaptive features. We were as inspired by the components of videogame controllers and mobile devices as we were from other music tech products on the market. The synth engine itself we created from the ground up. We think it has a unique sonic personality, versatility to support Orba’s multiple gestures, all of which had to be lightweight enough to live onboard and not break the bank.

Synthesizers are one of the great musical innovations of our era, and they’re having a renaissance. There are many great new hardware and software synths on the market. But so many synths are like Rubik’s Cubes to figure out. Our commitment was to make a feature-rich synth played with intuitive gestures instead of a million knobs.
