How do I play the INSTRUMENT 1?

What comes with the INSTRUMENT 1?
The INSTRUMENT 1 comes with a power adapter (plus international prongs), a Lightning to USB-Mini cable, and a USB-to-Mini-USB-B cable. The Artiphon iOS app is available for free in the Apple App Store. The INSTRUMENT 1 soft case and strap are available at artiphon.com.
How do I charge the INSTRUMENT 1?
The INSTRUMENT 1 is charged using the power adapter that is provided in the box. The power adapter has multiple types of prongs for the different international power outlets. The INSTRUMENT 1 does not charge through the Mini USB port.
Please do not use other power adapters with the INSTRUMENT 1. Even though they may fit, it is likely that another adapter would use a different voltage and would damage your INSTRUMENT 1.
Is the INSTRUMENT 1 a MIDI Controller?
Can the INSTRUMENT 1 be played using third-party hardware and software sound-generators?
Yes, any software-based MIDI sound-generator on iOS, Mac, or PC can be used. Select the INSTRUMENT 1 as your MIDI input device and make sure that the MIDI channel and pitch bend range setting are set to work as expected. For more information, see our guide on using Third-party Apps.
Can I plug it into my amp, headphones, or external speakers?
Yes, the INSTRUMENT 1 has an ⅛” audio jack. You can use this to plug in standard headphones, or use an auxiliary cable to plug into external speakers. Some speakers, amplifiers, and audio recording interfaces use a ¼” cable, so you may need an ⅛” to ¼” TRS stereo adapter.
How do I update my instrument’s app and firmware?
Download the INSTRUMENT 1 Editor from artiphon.com/downloads, or the Artiphon app from the iOS App store. The most up-to-date firmware is always available in these apps.
What devices are compatible with the INSTRUMENT 1?
iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5, iPad Pro (12.9-inch), iPad mini 4, iPad Air 2, iPad mini 3, iPad Air, iPad mini 2, iPad mini, iPad (4th Generation), iPod touch (6th generation), iPod touch (5th generation), Mac OS X 10.9 or later, and Windows 7 (64- bit) or later.
Does the INSTRUMENT 1 produce any sound by itself?
The INSTRUMENT 1 needs to be connected to a sound-generating device: iPhone, iPad, Mac, PC, or USB synth. That device will receive MIDI notes from the INSTRUMENT 1 and translate them into sound data. If the device is USB audio compliant (most of those listed above are), the INSTRUMENT 1 will play sound through its built-in speakers. Optionally, you can choose to plug in headphones or output sound from the connected device itself, bypassing the speakers on the INSTRUMENT 1.
The INSTRUMENT 1 is compatible with MIDI-enabled software on Mac and PC, including Ableton Live, Pro Tools, GarageBand, Logic, MainStage, FL Studio, Bitwig, Cubase, and more. Download the INSTRUMENT 1 Editor for Mac and Windows computers to customize your instrument settings when using third-party audio programs.
Does the INSTRUMENT 1 work with Android?
The INSTRUMENT 1 is a class-compliant USB MIDI and audio device that can play any MIDI-compatible software. We have done extensive testing on OS X, Windows, and iOS platforms. Currently, we are developing the Artiphon companion app to be native to iOS. Android support at this time is experimental.

When will INSTRUMENT 1 orders ship?
The INSTRUMENT 1 is in stock and ships within 2-3 business days.
What is the return policy for the INSTRUMENT 1?
We accommodate returns and issue refunds (subject to a 15% restocking fee) within 14 days of the INSTRUMENT 1’s arrival. Please note that return shipments must be in their original packaging with all package contents included in new or as-new condition. We require that returns be shipped using our prepaid shipping labels which can be obtained by contacting customer support at email@example.com. We do not offer refunds or returns for products received as a reward from Artiphon’s Kickstarter campaign. Products purchased from a third-party retailer can only be returned directly to retailer.
Is there warranty coverage for the INSTRUMENT 1?
Yes! Artiphon offers a one year manufacturer’s warranty on all products. For questions about your product’s performance and warranty coverage, contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
Does the INSTRUMENT 1 ship internationally?
The INSTRUMENT 1 ships to select countries worldwide. The current list of countries served can be seen below. Sign up for our mailing list for announcements of new countries open for shipping. Please note that our international shipments require an estimated 5% import duty plus applicable local sales tax to be collected by the carrier upon arrival.
